Gominolas para los patos (Candy for the Ducks, Béjar, SBQ, 2011), by Hugo Izarra with illustrations by Matt Sesow

including his iconic fish painting, is the first volume of El brut de los corazones solidarios (The Raw of Compassionate Hearts), a project by SBQ Solidario. Initiated by Luis Felipe Comendador, it supports small but impactful humanitarian causes through donated, copyleft works.

This beautifully crafted book, featuring Sesow’s powerful illustrations, raises funds for causes like aiding Jamir Alexander, a four-year-old Peruvian boy with psychomotor delays. It combines intense poetry exploring themes of loneliness and resilience with artwork that exemplifies humanity’s strength.

"On July 3, 2011, we delivered a sandwich cart to Cerro Cabras (Alto Trujillo), one of the poorest areas in Trujillo, Peru. The cart, adorned with Matt Sesow’s fish painting, was donated to Mrs. Hermelinda Chávez, a courageous mother of three, to help her sell food and support her family. She planned to share the cart with a neighbor, a young dentistry student striving to fund her education.

During the delivery, we shared the inspiring story behind Gominolas para los Patos (Candy for the Ducks), a book featuring Sesow’s artwork on the cover, using it as an example of resilience and compassion. Despite the challenges of carrying the cart up sandy terrain under the scorching sun, the day was filled with hope and joy as we connected with the community and made a meaningful impact."
